Lady’s Wager by Georgie Lee
Charlotte Stuart is no mealymouthed miss, waiting for her Prince Charming to save her from life as a spinster. Unlucky in love, Charlotte counts herself blessed - she has money, she has her causes and she has her cute little terrier, Minnie. But now, she has an irritating thorn in her side, by the name of Lord Woodcliff. Lord Woodcliff is an arrogant, condescending and (unfortunately) good looking peer of the realm. Seeing as how he’s also poor, Charlotte knows him to be a fortune hunter, and refuses to give him the time of day.
Edward Woodcliff is not poor, but as a peer, he knows that match-making mamas will be all over him once they learn he is looking for a wife. But unlike others, Edward wants to marry for love, so he devises this plan to help him find his future lady. Edward thinks he’s found her in the form of the lovely Miss Stuart, but his shyness is mistaken for arrogance and he can’t seem to overcome the barriers she has in place. But Edward has found a way to get around them, if only Charlotte would accept a Lady’s Wager.
I enjoyed how Edward and Charlotte are not your typical regency characters. Edward is a rare English lord - he wants to marry for love, he’s shy and not very confident of his appeal to Charlotte. Charlotte is a straight-forward young miss who is disgusted and confused with the intrigue that makes up London high society. Because she’s been burned in the past, Charlotte is not as straight-forward with her heart. Even though she’s attracted to Edward, she doesn’t trust him or her feelings. If you like regency romances where the road to love is not very smooth, but the characters are engaging, I bet you’d like Lady’s Wager.
